All children who are affected by skin allergies need to get proper relief from skin allergy symptoms. This relief for children with skin allergies is highly essential in order to make them comfortable and keep them hale and healthy.

Why Relief Is Important For Kids with Skin Allergies

The allergic reactions to skin allergies and their related skin rashes can be mild, moderate or severe. They produce mild itching and discomfort on one end of the spectrum whereas on the other end it could produce far more discomforting itching, tingling, pain and swelling. Under such circumstances it is essential that you relieve the child of its allergy symptoms so that it can carry out its normal activities without any difficulties.

One of the symptoms for kids’ skin allergies is itching; whenever the child gets skin allergies it has a tendency to scratch the areas where itching takes place. Continuous scratching of these areas can cause more inflammation and the area gets cracked and becomes dry. Tears, cracks and dryness cause more pain to the child and there is a possibility of getting secondary infections due to this. It is quite common for children who have scratched their skin badly getting Impetigo and other viral and bacterial infections.

Skin allergy rashes such as hives caused by a systemic reaction require to be controlled not only to give comfort to the child but also to keep the child hale and healthy. The systemic allergy reactions can affect the airways, nasal passages and lungs; as a result of this the child may have problems such as sleeplessness, fatigue, asthma, breathing difficulties etc. Such problems have negative effect on the child’s active life and education.

Medication Options for Kids with Skin Allergies

In order to relieve the kids with skin allergies a number of several medication options exist; these are:

Topical corticosteroid creams and ointments for relieving inflammation
Systemic or oral corticosteroids for certain types of skin allergies
Anti-itch or antipruritic lotions for relieving itching and preventing associated skin damage
Drying lotions, such as calamine lotion, for certain types of skin allergies such as like poison ivy
Antihistamines for reversing an allergic reaction for a time and break the reaction until the substance is removed from the skin and/or system

In order to treat mild to moderate skin allergies one can resort to over-the-counter versions of the drugs which are good enough; however, severe cases may require a doctor's prescription.

Non-Medicinal Relief Measures for Children with Skin Allergies

Just like in any other treatment of allergic reactions, skin allergy reactions in children have to be controlled by removing the source of the allergic reaction.  Hence, you should look at recently ingested or contacted products by the child to identify the source that has caused this skin allergy with a view to eliminate the source of problem.

Contact dermatitis or allergic skin rash occurs when the child’s skin comes into contact with an allergen, such as a plant, metal, or chemical.  Since the allergic reactions occur by touching an allergic substance you must thoroughly wash the contact area for removing the allergy trigger and giving relief to the child. In addition, you could follow the relief measures given below.

Use of cool and wet compresses against swollen and inflamed areas
Applying lotions and creams to moisturize dry, cracking skin allergy rashes – this is primarily in the treatment of atopic dermatitis
Bathing the child in an oatmeal bath to soothe itching
Using colloidal oatmeal creams, soaps, and products to relieve itching and promote healing
Dressing the child in natural cotton fibers

If the child has either a moderate or minor hives it has two options; first is to allow the rash to run its full course. Alternately the child can be given oral medication to stop the reaction. The only relief that is possible is to manage the hives and swelling until the rash subsides.

The atopic dermatitis or eczema can be controlled by controlling of scratching of the rash by the child. Following actions will help in this.

Give warm water baths to the child; hot water should not be used
Moisturize frequently with fragrance-free, high-quality skin creams and lotions
Treat with oral medications to stop the allergic reaction

In order control the rash in atopic dermatitis you should control the itch first.

By following certain basic things given above you should be able to relieve rashes in kids with skin allergies.  In case you find that these measures have not yielded any results and the allergic reaction is severe thereby affecting critical body functions you should opt for medical attention.
